37-year-old PUR gets a new life
The Dutch research project 'Circulair Ketenproject: hergebruik PIR/PUR isolatieplaten' (circular supply chain project: reuse of PIR/PUR insulation boards) produced a full-circle case, with the dismantling carried out by BORK Groep. Within the research project, they then also reused the insulation boards to insulate a flat roof.
From the start of Start2ReuseInsulation, the project team set up a collaboration with the team of 'Circulaire Ketenproject'. The Netherlands sent us 23 cases that we could use for performance assessment within our project. The raw data was then shared with the Dutch team, so that they could also work with this data within their project. This insulation was also tested by UGent and the results were used as the basis for this pilot.
Pilot
The insulation from 1988 was dismantled by BORK GROEP from the roof of storage warehouses. Within the Dutch research project 'Circulaire Ketenproject', a new destination was sought. It was found in the renovation of the Rivierenhuis in Amsterdam, where the insulation was reused as roof insulation for a new extension. The aim of this pilot was to test in practice how reused insulation boards can be handled on the construction site and which points of attention arise.
Reintegration of PUR
The reused PUR boards were applied as the bottom insulation layer in a multi-layer system. A second layer of new insulation was installed on top of this layer. This build-up made it possible to apply the reused boards in a practical way, while any small imperfections in the material could be compensated for by the layer above.
You can find an interview with the roofer about his experiences with applying reused insulation in the report.
